I have not come across one of these before. Can you tell me how to check it and how important to the smooth running of the car it is?
Thank you

In my opinion, the best thing to do is fit an electric fuel pump so that you get a continuous flow of cold petrol through the carb to keep it relatively cool. The X19 is infamous for heat soak causing hot start issues. I don't think the fan is that effective.

A dig into history turned up that the fan was needed to stop fuel vapour escaping after stopping - to meet USA emissions regs! I'm with Martin on the pros of the electric fuel pump esp. if you do any long trips (6 or 7 hrs at a time!)where heat soak sets in.

David, to test the fan disconnect the sender wires at the base of the carb. Join the two wires together and the fan should start spinning.

Yes, electric fuel pumps are better however I have never had any evaporation problems when starting from hot in any of my cars. Perhaps i'm lucky! If you want originality then stick with mechanical!
