I stripped down the engine on my 1300 today and found it needs a major overhaul worn bores, burnt valves and whatever else might lurking. So do recon it or throw in a reconditioned 1500 unit which I have got. I know it does not sound right but this 1300 has been re sprayed red and no longer original. Has anyone done this and does the 4 speed box marry up to the 1500 block?

Why don't you fit a 5 speed gear box rather than the 4 speed 1300 gear box?
Not sure whether you will need to alter the rear suspension as the 1500 sits higher at the back than the 1300.

From what I understand, the 5 speed doesn't fit in the 1300 body as the 1500 body has a modified chassis rail to accommodate the longer transmission.

why not fit the 1500 with the four speed gearbox with a lower final drive if i remember the 1300 does 16.5mph per 1000rpm you could fit a strada 105tc final drive which would give you 18mph(maybe more) per 1000rpm which is basically the same mph per 1000rpm as the x1/9 1500 gearbox

When I bought mine it came with a 1500 engine and a 4 speed gearbox. It had retained the 1300 flywheel, clutch and starter motor.
A few years later I changed it to a 5 speed gearbox. I didn't have to do any body work mods, even though it's a 1300 the chassis rail was like the 1500 version.
However I did have to change both rear hubs, axles, flywheel, starter and clutch.
I seem to remember that the 1500 engine is slightly taller too, you may have to modify the engine lid brackets to give a little more clearance.

Hi, thanks for the replies, I am wondering now to do a complete recon of this 1300 engine because it seems to be as broad as it is long and it does keep it fairly original to the chassis. But I have learnt something in the mechanical differences. S. J. Green have you got any pictures of your x1/9 with the lido bumpers because it looks stunning.

Any exxy engine is likely to be getting a bit past it by now and so a rebuild would be a good option - guaranteed results but definitely more expensive. However, a few inexpensive tweaks added into a 1300 rebuild along with a decent carb could have you producing more hp than a standard 1500 with no worry about spending money and time on the conversion.

Well the easiest upgrades are the 1500cc carb fits the 1300...a decent sports manifold and exhaust along with the carb would give you the power of a 1500

I have got a 1500 carb with manual choke conversion and sports exhaust, just need to find a manifold now. I took delivery of my lido bumpers today to go onto it, I just need to make an executive decision on what colour to spray it.

I have a '78 1300 and engine was replaced with a 1500, using the 1300 flywheel/clutch it still has the original 4 speed 'box.
That way you avoid changing the left wishbone, driveshafts and other bits and pieces.

Also using parts from the x1/9 4-speed with a 5 speed box like the Strada 60 would allow you to have a 5 speed with the tripods....
