It won't start as soon it is warmed up

Hi my vs has real problems starting as soon it is warm, it has got an electric fuel pump which I thought would solve hot starting. Also it absolutely stinks of exhaust fumes when running. Could it be cylinder head problems?

have you fitted a fuel pressure regulator? is your heat shield still on the exhaust manifold?

There is no pressure regulator and the heat shield is still on. I was wondering could it be the float

so what psi is the fuel pump pushing the fuel through? the one i have fitted is running 6 psi but i fitted a fuel pressure regulator and it runs/starts better at 2.5 psi, i am not saying this is your problem but maybe you could be flooding the carb especially if you are pumping the throttle quite a bit and the fuel pressure is too high

Usually a process of elimination and not to assume that problems are connected. Might it be that the exhaust fumes are actually petrol fumes? A check of the fuel pressure, new float valve (may not be able to cope with new pump fuel pressure), punctured float?, check plugs, leads, cap, points (if fitted), air filter etc. Automatic chokes can cause problems such as rich running, change to a manual if possible. Set the carb and timing to factory/manual settings. Consider using a rolling road, the results are well worth as apart from getting the car set it can highlight problems that otherwise may be difficult to diagnose. Word of warning about rolling roads - only go to a garage with a good reputation with carbs, not many around.
Most likely a combination of the above. Good luck.

Hi, I have got one of those bang bang fuel pumps with no pressure regulator so could be the answer but it starts no problem on cold and I presume with the fuel pump still pushing the same amount of fuel. Where do you get fuel pressure regulator and how do you fit on?

Hi Cameron, just to echo what Pete and Speedy have said, it sounds highly likely that your pump is defeating the float valve in the carb and is flooding it. That is where I would look first. Here is a link to a seller of suitable regulators. You need the simple straight in - out type with 8 mm hose tails.

Thanks guys, I will order one of those tonight. I presume the car is running very rich at the moment which may count for the stinking exhaust.

Its recommended you use ptfe tape on the thread of the inlet and outlet fittings so there's no leaks

Ok thanks, I naturally presume it is installed between fuel pump and carb

Put a fuel regulator on today, the one of ebay that is on peter thorpe's post and so far it is starting better and running a lot better.
