I have removed my thermostat housing and cleaned it up and painted it..I have a new gasket and wondered what sealant you recommend to use?

I used nothing on mine the other day. Silicone couldn't hurt though I guess.

No leaks. I have fitted modern water pumps to other cars with paper gaskets and no sealer also. I think some people do, but a pro mechanic assures me if it comes with a paper gasket then usually no sealant should be needed.

You shouldn't need to use any sealant when fitting a new gasket providing the mating surfaces are clean, reasonably flat and free from dents etc.
The problem is that if you use too much sealant it will make it difficult to remove the gasket from the surfaces in the future.

I would only use a small dab to possibly locate the gasket when fitting, otherwise you shouldn't need any.
