Oh bliss, brake master cylinder gone! was created by Richard Walker
Driving along this morning and the pedals just didn't feel as grippy as usual. A quick look down reveals shiny wet pedals. Fortunately it's only just started and there's no spillage anywhere yet. So, I bet you can't guess what I'll be doing this week in the red-hot evenings, may as well replace all three low pressure reservoir hoses while I'm in there. On the bright side,I suppose it has lasted 24 years.

Might be worth checking the clutch master cylinder while you're at it....get it all over with in one go!

24 years is excellent for a master cylinder. I'm glad you still have her Richard, surely it must be the best two weeks of weather we have had since you have owned the car!

Yeah, best weather we've had in the 7 years we've owned it. After an early wobble I can't ever see it being up for sale to be honest. We actually managed to get to Stanford Hall in it this year! The bits have come today so with a couple of evenings, we should be running again on Saturday lunchtime, all being well. Can't complain as this is the first issue in 11000 miles and it still got home no problem. If I get chance I will try and take a few pics and put a "how to" together for other members

Well,I've got the pedal box out and rebuilt with new cylinders, new hoses run but getting all three of the new hoses through the bulkhead without kinking is not easy. It's not helped by the new clutch hose being a lot bigger than the old green one. One other potential problem will be speedo cable removal in the future, there's no way the end connector would pull through the bulkhead with all three hoses still in. I think I'm going to open up the hole a bit to help with future maintenance. Just wanted to check how you guys got on when you did it before I start filing.

I didn't cut the hoses as short as the originals. By leaving them a bit longer you can get a larger radius curve to keep things smooth.
I also lathered the hoses with WD40 to slide them through the bulkhead grommet and then they slid through pretty easily.

3 weeks on and it's alive. Weathers just been too hot to be in the garage during the day so just been doing a few hours here and there when its been a bit cooler.
It's definately the worst job on an X bar none. I ended up opening up the hole above the pedal box a little and used some edging strip instead of the grommet. This will give me enough room to get the speedo cable end through when that needs changing. Loads of silicone spray helped the new hoses slide through the other grommet into the front luggage area. It's not an easy job but take your time and do it in a few short sessions.
