Car splutters to a halt!

Well I have my Lido finished I will post a full report with lots of pics tonight. Just before I started the restoration the car would conk out after 3 miles on the M55 taking no throttle it seemed like a fuel starvation problem and I had to have it towed home, so during the restoration I put on a new fuel filter, fuel pump, condenser, rotor arm and points. Yesterday the same thing exactly after a few miles on the motorway the car spluttered to a halt so just before it died I pulled on the choke and it responded getting me the mile back home with the choke on .

Has anyone any idea what it could be?

Thanks

Kev

Check the filter on the end of the petrol pick up pipe in the tank. When i bought mine it had had very little use in the preceeding several years and the gauze was gummed up with petrol residues. I just removed it and now run with a simple disposable in line filter

Replied by Charlie on topic Car splutters to a halt!
As Jonathan says its on the end of the pick up pipe in the tank. Whilst it out, get the torch out and have a good look in the bottom of the tank.

replace the gaskets on the carb you need two of them, and check the push rod into the block from the fuel pump this can be worn down (nothing wrong with pump )

Michael

My car was the same when it heated up it ran like a dog with one leg (blue car)

I have had that many Fiats they gave me a job selling them

A long shot this one but easy to check. Run the engine for a while/until it conks out and then undo the fuel cap, if it feels like it is sucked on and there is an inrush of air when you prise it off then your tank breather could be blocked causing a vacuum This makes it progressively more difficult for the pump to draw off fuel. Unusual but I have known it.

my money is on the carb base gaskets... had the same thing happen to me. Feels like fuel starvation or a condenser failure. I bet after a few mins it cools down and appears to be ok. when I took my carb off there were no gaskets at all!

Two new gaskets for a couple of quid and the car has been perfect since.
