Fuel Pump was created by Tom
Just after a bit of advice really. I am currently semi-restoring a 1987 X19 on carbs and the fuel pump has given up. Is it worth me re-building it or getting a new mechanical one. Or do I just do away with it and get an electric one??? If so, which electric fuel pump works the best? I don't mind spending the money if it is worth it - I just want the reliability.

Thanks

The mechanical pump is cheap enough to replace but an electric pump offers better starting reliability and well worth the investment.

There are plenty of swap-in options available - personally I've used a Facet pump in the past combined with a pressure regulator to make sure the carb doesn't flood the float chamber.

Best option is to get an upgrade kit as it will include pretty much everything you need.

Ive fitted several of the facet red tops with a filter king.

But lesser facet pumps will do just as well (ie silver top)

Hi, I would also suggest using the Facet pump plus additional regulator. Hopefully have attached a couple of photos of how I installed the units. Good luck. Martin

Hi

Not wanting to knock the Facet pump route as they have been used for years and people are happy with them but I have opted down a simpler and cheaper option

Webcon have produced a high volume low pressure pump designed for their Weber carbs. see link

www.webcon.co.uk/shop/shopexd.asp?id=48

Its a neat pump that dose not need a regulator and is easy to fit.

I am using a VW safety cut out relay that only supplies power to the pump when the engine is turning and the coil is producing a spark.

hope this is useful

That looks different, how quiet is it Guy as my only grumble with the Facet is its a little noisy........

Mark, You still get a buzz of the pump but its much less noisy than the cube or silver/red top.

Hi, Have you checked that the Webcon pump can handle the prime height. The X19 has a vertical tank and I know that a lot of pumps are not specced for the height required for our cars. A number of the Facet pumps are deffinately speeced with at least 0.6m lift.

I have made an enquiry about the wencon pump and have been told that as long as it is close to the feel tank and no more than 12" above the bottom of the tank it shouldn't be a problem.Hope this is useful.

I think you will struggle to mount the fuel pump sensibly less than 12 inches from the bottom of the tank. I believe this is why most people have opted for Facet pumps that can be mounted 0.6m above the bottom of the tank.

Hi there is plenty space to sensibly mount the pump in the engine bay on the chassis cross member on the N/S which is only 8" from the base of the tank and you can also keep your carb cooling fan set up as well if wanted

You will still need a way to prime the pump - ie to get the fuel up and out of the tank and down to the pump- facet is simpler and if you use rubber mounts between the mounting frame and the car noise is minimal. Pump in tank is the other option.
