Anyone ever done a toyota MR2 engine and gearbox transplant? Just wondered if it was possible and if the power gains / reliability were worth the hassle...

1983 1500 (currently restoring it)
1989 1500 GF - on the road
2003 Mazda RX8 - modern version of the X1/9

Aspires to a Lancia MonteCarlo (code number by Fiat and Lancia X1/8 then X1/20)

Probably a lot less hassle to simply go out and by an MR2! :P

It has been done before, I can't remember where I read about it though.

A well sorted Uno Turbo conversion would be a much more logical/easier option.

If you were doing the mr2 conversion, the Honda K20 engine would be the better engine, they all use it on X web.

Mark I drove a 1600 bravo (x19 style block) to see if it was worth the trouble - my opinion, no. Quite flat really and would require a load of modified parts to make anything fruity.

Terry - Guy croft is doing a Twin-cam conversion on he facebook page now. The car was built by John Brown engineering in Sussex. Nick and I met John at his workshop last year. The car looks mental! (in a good way). One serious track day racer. (With brakes and suspension to match). I wouldn't be happy up against it!

Have you seen that engine? you could eat your dinner off it.

Rob ive seen and read the Honda implants but don't you think its a bit wrong to install a Jap motor in a Ital car?
Its like sticking a Vauxhall motor in a Ford.........Wrong

How about the 1800 vvc from the MGF? or even the 1.7 ford/yamaha sigma motor from the Racing Puma - the manifolds are the right way round!

Agreed, or one can push the boat out a little and put in an Alfa V6. :)

End of the day, if I had a blank canvas and blank cheque book to do the 'ultimate' X1/9 - I'd build one with an Integrale 16V turbo lump as per the infamous one from Israel thats been doing the rounds on youtube etc.

This is a good Clarkson article to read in light of this post:

One of my favourite conversions would be the Alfa V6 with a supercharger - be it in Paul's Montecarlo. The difference that blower made was staggering. But would I want it in my exxy? Maybe in a race car, but no. Considering the weight issue and even fuel I would venture to a modern petrol turbo engine.

I've had this conversation with Steve in the pub a few times and I think the fiat 500 Abarth engine would be the way to go. Economical, reliable and with some decent management to let breathe and take the fuel it needs - it could be fantastic. The lighter weight and Italian heart is a big plus for me.
