Wot no lollipop? was created by Martin Styles
A bit of a puzzle...
My newly aquired '82 car has a very slack gear linkage and doesn't appear to have the rubber lollipop thingymajig. I bought a replacement lollipop for it and it doesn't fit - it's too long.
The metal piece that's on the car looks very well made and does a good job of looking original -
anyone know if this is an original part; and if it's not any suggestions as to why the replacement lollipop doesn't fit?

Hi Martin.
I have an 83 vs, and did the same as you and bought a new lollipop, but alas the same problem
no lollipop !
Confused ! I slackend the bolts off andpositioned the gearstick in a central position and tightened the bolts, this appeared to sort out the issue (at least on mine) :woohoo:
I thought all exxys had this type of linkage , but it appears not.
ps. that looks nice and clean anyway.

HI
My 1982 car looks exactly the same (except not as clean and oil free).

Interesting. So it appears early cars (1300s) had a rubber lollipop and then it was deleted and replaced by a solid link for the 1500... only to be re-instated again later.
I've tightened the 'gearbox end' bolt and added another wavy washer which has helped the gearchange feel, but I assume the rubber lollipop is there to isolate the gear lever from vibration and to allow more engine/gearbox movement on the gearbox mounts - so I'm concerned with not having a rubber link in there.
I'm now pondering getting hold of a universal joint from a steering column or similar, and adapting it to make the link - that should give a really positive gearchange and not stress the gear lever when the engine rocks. Has anyone done this before?
ps. the car is unbelievably clean - I bought it at the national in Yorkshire this year (after my GF won the 'did well to get there' award) and I'm very pleased so far...

Rosie is the same age (and colour) as yours, Martin, so must assume I have no lollipop either, gearchange also a bit vague, but not so worried now I know lollipop thingy won't suddenly go on me

Nigel, the original owner (I am the 2nd owner) lived in Shoreham by Sea and bought her from PDH, who were Fiat dealrrs, so they must have registered her.

Yes PDH were main dealers local to me, they had a number of garages, Shoreham being one and the other was at Hassocks, nr Burgess Hill West Sussex.

Good to see you back round these ere parts Martin - and congrats on the new acquisition! post some pics if you can!
do you still have the GF as well? Sorry I can't advise on the lollipop situation, thats yet another oddity I was unaware of that some cars did without them completely, as all the exxies I've owned have had them....
