Hi All,

I am new to this site but not new to classic car ownership.

Have just purchsed a 1988 X1/9 in Mica blue - cant wait to get it next week, will post some photos if anybody is interested.

Can anybody reccommend a good insurance company please

Also have a couple of technical issues to sort, The fuel guage does not work - for one!

Just love x1/9' s had one in 1985 when it was two or three years old ETW648Y ?? is it still out there I wonder

Am based in Kent - so any replies would be welcome

Cheers

Graham

Hi and welcome,
I've had my mica blue 89 GF for a couple of months now so was in a similar position to you a while back.
I have made the usual sorts of mofifications for reliability (electric fuel pump, electronic ignition, cam belt change, etc) and sorted out all the little gremlins. Yesterday had it set up on the rolling road - the carb settings were all wrong. It now runs as very well :)
I used Lancaster classic car insurance - at £95, not too bad.

I am with Footman James insurance. £200 is very good I think considering my old car, a Citroen BX 1.4 was almost a grand for the year. I later found out I could have gone with Footman James and it would have been the same as the X1/9, but the £1000 was with Lancaster, who previously had been very reasonable for an old Citroen CX I had (£250). I think Lancaster did not see the BX as a classic and so it went on one of their standard policies.

You'll love the X1/9. I am doing mine up for its MOT, and I reckon I will take it for an initial test in the first weekend of August. I have brakes to service, idle speed to set, cooling fan to fix, fog lamp to fix, and possibly some welding, although I will leave the welding and see what they say initially, as its touch and go as to whether they will pick it up.

Graham,

Welcome, I'm also based in Kent (north) with a few personal spares but happy to help out others if required. Fuel gauge shouldn't be to difficult to sort out, worst case the sender needs changing, else just a bad supply / earth I suspect. PM me with some contact details and I'll get back to you.

If you're about, book yourself in at the Honnington Italian car show hopefully there'll be a few of us there.

Regards, Ian

Welcome to the Club Graham. You will soon find that x19s are highly addictive. There is always the sense that you can always improve things on the car, be it the engine, handling, the lights, in fact all sorts.. It's the type of car that you never get bored with and they are just simply stunning to look at and even better to drive! Most owners have more than one!

Thank you to all that have replied

You are right x1/9's are addictive - loved the first one in 1985 and have come back for more after an MG

Hope to become more involved with the club as soon as I get my car on Saturday, mind you have a 200 mile journey home and it really has not had a shake down since the resto so luck will be required.

Will get some pics as soon as poss

Hi Again,

Drove home 200 miles yesterday in my newly pyrchased X1/9, & it did not miss a bit. I cant wipe the smile off my face!

Just need a few replacement bits to finish off, fiddly trim bits mainly and to sort the fuel guage that does not work - Then happy days!

Does anybody know if the Targa roof on a 1988 car should have been painted (black) as it appears that mine has been sprayed. Dont recall from my mucholder car during the mid 80's

Thanks and promise I will get some snaps on the site for you to comment on soon

Graham,

Glad to hear you made it home safe and sound, what's your approximate location in Kent?

I don't believe any of the roofs where painted with a smooth finish as standard. Others may be able to more accurate information of the factory finishes.

I have a spare fuel sender in my garage if you find out you need one.

Regards,

Ian
