Great find for some serious power! was created by Rob Warren
A few months back a mate of mine (and MOT tester!) started working for a Fiat Coupe Specialist, which is ironically ten minutes away from where I live.
www.fiatcoupespecialist.com/
Joe the owner wanted to have a look at my turbo conversion and I too wanted to see his projects, so a few weeks back before the rubbish weather I took a trip there (the only outing I have done in the car this year) and was amazed at the amount of coops I saw. Joe seemed a really good bloke and was surrounded by coops, many breakers and cars being fully rebuilt/modified.
Joe thought a 20v turbo would be too wide for the X but a 16v turbo (Intergrale engine) would be just right. In the coupe form, it's a reliable 190bhp as standard. Tuned up of course it can make an X do this:

I thought the inlets/exhaust was on the 'wrong' side for the integrale engine? I know it *can* be done, but believe it requires relocation of the fuel tank to the front, and some serious firewall modding....

These coupe engines are in plentiful supply and cheap. I've seen complete cars go for £500 so that's a big engine power upgrade with scope for plenty of more performance (300hp) for little cost. The V6 conversion is lovely, I've been in Nick Troth's car a few times and seen Rachael's coming along in his workshop. This conversion is very, very quick and never runs out of puff.
I actually bought a 164 Alfa with Nick, stripped it and was about to do the conversion when I felt the uno turbo was the best compromise for me. I didn't want to lose my wheels I currently have (I would have had to go to the 5 stud)and the moving of the wishbones was beyond my capabilities, plus the fact that I would have had to chop up the rear arches and made some big flares (Nick would have had to have done all this for me).
The uno engine is becoming more and more rare now. Bang for buck (190hp in reliable standard form), I think this 2.0 turbo conversion would suit really nice existing cars like Mark's below, where as the V6s (as they are so further modified in the body) are best left to the cars requiring restoration. It's always a shame to chop up a nice car. For me personally, I've done my modifying for now. Now that Mark's car is back on the road again I'm starting on my blue 1300, keeping it as original as possible.

As a total Italiaphile and Petrolhead I always used to scan the local press for local X's to check out even if I was not in the market (C'mon we all did didn't we?!) Thats when they were more commonly around... Anyway I'll never forgot the day when a local used car dealer advertised a duo-tone blue with Tan VS for sale. As it was not far I popped down to view. I was intrigued immediately when I saw the exhaust(s) openings from the rear and the modified cooling arrangement at the back. Turned out the car had a 2.0 Lancia twin-cam conversion. It went like stink - thing is the 'dealer' had absolutely no idea the engine was not the one supplied in the car when it left the factory! ...wonder what happened to it....
