X1/9 ADVICE PLEASE.

Sorting a few jobs, new HT leads,plugs, dis. cap etc. when I noticed a small black box near the coil. There is a lead hanging from said box which reaches the coil and looks like it should be attached but is just hanging. Anyone know what it is and what its for? Should it be attached to the coil? If so, positive or negative side.

Hi, not sure what part you are referring to it doesn't sound standard to me, what year is the car engine size?

Please could you post a picture and any part numbers that may help identify.

Its 1982, 1500cc. Not very good with computers so will have to wait for my son to post pics.
Its about the size of a condenser and is attached to one of the engine lid hinge bolts approx 5 inches from the coil. The wire which is hanging from it is long enough to reach the coil. Looked in haynes manual and there is a photo of the coil with a similar thing as this positioned the same distance from the coil but no explanation as to what its function is. Don't know if I should reattach it or not.

Sounds like its the condenser

It's the coil suppressor normally connected to the positive side of the coil (pink wire) as badly show in the attached picture suppressor out of shot.



I would guess it has been disconnected as it was causing a problem.
