My New X1/9

My New X1/9 was created by Rezam
Today I made the trip to London to pick up my new Gran Finale X1/9 and I can officially say I am one happy bunny.
It took a little bit to get it running because it hadnt been driven for a couple of years and the petrol in it was a bit old. But with a little percievernce we got it started. The brakes were sticking as expected but I managed to bleed them a little in a local Tesco car park and get the car back to Birmingham. I am going to need some advice though to get it completely roadworthy. Here are the good and bad bits:
GOOD
1. Cars fun to drive
2. No knocks or strange noises
3. Engine seems to be running on the whole pretty well
4. Steering seems fine
5. Pop up lights work
6. Floor is solid
7. Had good looking woman eyeing me and the car up on the way back
8. Some good history with the car
BAD
1. Brakes are terrible. I need to stamp on them to get the car to stop. I think I'll need to bleed them properly and maybe take a closer look to see if the calipers are working properly
2. Car has flat spots and stalls when pulling off. I'm hoping a service and a tune up to the carb should sort this out.
3. Indicators dont work but the hazards do. Problem with the slak maybe?
4. One pop up light didnt go down but does now.
5. Heater fan doesnt seem to work
6. Electric windows are slow. What do you reckon: switches or mechanism?
7. Rusty back arch
8. Rust around scuttle and windscreen although not really spread to the posts
9. Rust in the boot. Can see the floor!
Any advice here would be really appreciated. Are any of these common faults or are there easy fixes?
As to the bodywork I'm trying to decide whether to bodge it with filler, fibreglass and rust remedy or pay someone for a proper job with new metal. You see, the expensive of getting it done is an issue here and secondly I'd really love to get the car on the road within the next couple of weeks.
What do you think???

The brakes have a bad reputation, but good maintenance as you are suggesting will help things, there are a number of posts on improving the brakes.
2. Car has flat spots and stalls when pulling off. I'm hoping a service and a tune up to the carb should sort this out.
Should do, somebody else may be able to advise better on this.
3. Indicators dont work but the hazards do. Problem with the slak maybe?
It seems like the stalk is most likely at fault but it could also be the hazard warning switch causing this issue
4. One pop up light didnt go down but does now.
Possible bad earth, or faulty diode on motor. www.x19spares.co.uk/ sell replacement diodes.
5. Heater fan doesnt seem to work. Check fuses, power to switch and then power to fan. The wires are accessible and hang down near the centre console.
6. Electric windows are slow. What do you reckon: switches or mechanism?
Possibly mechanism lack of use, but may also be a lack of power, you can modify the wiring loom to assist with the power issue. The Monte Hospital sells kits for improving the same issue on the Lancia Montecarlo.
7. Rusty back arch
8. Rust around scuttle and windscreen although not really spread to the posts
9. Rust in the boot. Can see the floor!
You can get replacement panels for those rusty spots from eurosport
www.eurosport-uk.net/shop/index.php?main...1_13&products_id=118
or Ebay

Excellent!
Thanks for the advise!
If anyone else on the forum has any other ideas I'd be happy to listen!

Wow, not wishing to undercut anyone, but 1N4001, 2, 3 etc. diodes are 39p each from Maplin and around 6p each from "proper" electronics suppliers!

and they're not even the correct type of diode, you should really use an avalanche type like the originals. I bought some a few years ago, which I fitted to mine the originals weren't available any more but I found a direct replacement far better than a 1N4000 series. I think I have the data sheet somewhere I'll dig it out and advise of the part number.

I'm intrigued. It's a while since I studied any electronics but I don't think the X1/9's diodes are intended to perform the usual function of avalanche diodes.

You could well be right there, am I right in thinking they are actually only used in fwd bias?

Yes, I wrote a little essay about the headlight motor circuit on Xweb a while back. I drew a diagram that remarkably enough has appeared on some other forums!
The diodes are only there to stop each motor's rotary switch back-feeding the other. Without them you would need two separate control relays, each driving one motor circuit. I've attached my original diagram.

Strange that fiat selected a avalanche diode in the first place unless my memory serves me wrong of course and it was just a std diode originally?

I don't know, I'm no expert! I guess back then the choice of diodes was not what we have now!
