Insurance was created by Rezam
Now then,

I'm probably going to go shopping for insurance later on today so I can get driving in the new x1/9 tomorrow.

What have people found to be the best insurance company - in terms of both price and benefits?

I've also noticed there's a club discount available. Does anyone think the discount makes a real difference or should i just shop around as I normally would?

I've got a mate who's in the MX5 club and he gets an amazing deal on a insurance policy set up just for the club.

I've got my Mk1 Capri insured through Carol Nash who are pretty good (10000 miles fully comp, UK and European breakdown all for under £200) but I dont think they offer a multicar policy.

Any input into this would be fantastic.

Thanks

Hi Rezam,

I'm with Peter Best and my last policy was around £135 for 3000 miles including European cover and breakdown cover. They do give a club discount, but I'm not sure how much it is. I'd be really interested in how much club discount you get as we can use this sort of information to promote the benefits of being in the club.

What kind of discount do other members get from their insurance companies?

Well

I spent a couple of hours on Friday afternoon calling around for quotes and eventually ended up with Carol Nash who offered me a 20% discount for already having a car with them and a 10% discount for being a club member (or so they say). It came in a little under 400 pounds, which I think is a little bit high but they did throw in AA breakdown for the UK and Europe and also 90 days European, legal expenses etc etc

The others I rang were giving me quotes of around the 700 pounds mark even with club discount. Apparenlty, my post code in Birmingham is not the greatest for insurance.

So, this really did make me think... Does the club discount really exist or are the insurance companies just telling us we're getting a discount?

Maybe, by using our strength in numbers we could pin down a single insurance company and thrash out a special club policy.

What does everyone think? I'd be more than happy to get on the blower to them and try and negotiate something if we can get a good few of us to suppost this. We could all save millions!!! Well, maybe a few quid.

Same as Scott - Lancaster Insurance for me less than £100 a bargain!
Not sure how much of a discount I got for club membership - Houghton Insurance are also very competitive and offer great service.
Cheers Chris.

I'm with lancaster too, but mine was £360 last year and my renewal has come through at £760!!!!

I reckon this is due to the fact I had to make an insurance claim last year- someone knicked my Mk2 Jetta GTI- Even though I had no claims bonus protection it still affects your premium in a big way.

Living in Glasgow, I've also got about the worst postcode in the world in the eyes of insurance companies. Plus I did 13,000 miles in my first year of ownership, and I'm (fleetingly) 29.

Funny you should mention this - My policy about to end. Mines on a Classic policy with just 1000/1500 miles and it all obviously depends on circumstance/age etc. I was with Adrian Flux at £117 pa but a random google search on classic insurers lead me to Lancaster and they have just quoted me £88 for 1000 mile classic policy! My cheque will be in the post to them this week. My cars standard 1300.

Fiat Coupe 20VT LE - Pininfarina
Lotus Turbo Esprit HC - Giugiaro

Jack,

Looks like I'm in the same boat as you. I too live in a really bad postcode area so insurance is through the roof for me on the x1/9. Some insurance companies said they wouldn't even insure me!

However, if any of you guys with cheap insurance wants to adopt me or let me move in with you please let me know. Insurance on 3 cars is crippling me!!!

Just renewed, went with Lancaster this year, £83.37 for 3000 miles & £100 excess. Includes legal cover, but I live in a good postcode area and I'm of a certain age
It's worth ringing them as I got £12 shaved off the online quote.

Have you guys got an agreed value on these Lancaster quotes and if so, what kind of values. I currently pay £150 for 3000miles and an agreed value of £6000 through my local broker with KLM insurance. I am an old fart though at 44 so maybe that helps a bit.

No, just market value, I put £3500 as rough guideline as that's what I paid last year, even though I've spent £2500 since
