braking was created by John Palmer
I have fitted all new discs & pads, replaced brake fluid and bled system 3 times.when braking the pedal is nearly halfway down before any effect of braking is felt.could it mean new master cylinder or is ther some other explanation?any advice would be welcome.cheers

Hi John, I assume that the system was all working normally before you started this work?

How did you replace the fluid did the system run dry at any point? As they may have caused a seal in the master to start leaking.

If the system didn't run dry then you shouldn't have had any air bubbles when you bled the system. If you did that may again indicate a worn master.

The new system will require some additional pedal while it all beds in again, but not as much as halfway. Personally I prefer to use the old pads when I fit new discs for a short time, to absorb any oil or protective coatings that cover the new disc, which I didn't clean off properly.

How does the pedal feel when it does operate the brakes? Is it spongy or springy still? If it goes halfway down and then goes firm, that suggests to me one circuit has failed. This probably means a new M/C is required I'm afraid :(

Unlike most cars the X1/9 has a duel circuit brake where it's the front or back. Most modern cars are diagonal. Never tried it but might be worth jacking up the back, apply the brake and see if you can turn the wheels?? When the brakes are good they work as well as a modern car with a servo.
