Rob yes indeed I did trial this in my Lido and had it in the system for about a month.

My experience was that It gave a high level of temperature gauge variation and the engine overall ran much hotter - having spoke to people at the time the conclusion was that it was not satisfactory for an x19 as the cooling system requires pressureisation inorder for the coolant to circulate efficiently. As soon as I worked the engine ie climbing a hill or speed the temperature gauge would almost redline. Although it did not boil & you could remove the expansion tank cap with the engine hot - I just wasnt confident enough to carry on using it.

It was also an expensive trial at over £10 for 5 litres.

I was at the restoration show in Stoneleigh last month and these guys were doing a demo on a old pre-war Bentley. First they used a flushing fluid which rids the system of any traces of water, then they filled it up with the coolant. Costs were £25 for 5 litres of flush and £60 for 5 litres of coolant. With what Les has said, it seems more suitable for older vintage cars. They were doing a good sales job on me saying yes it would be fine for the X1/9 but it was too expensive for my liking.

Thanks Les & Steve, think I will stick to anti freeze in the X1/9,it is expensive but if it never needs changeing then might not be that dear. I have had my X1/9 15 years and changed anti freeze every 2 years as reccomended so to change once might not have been so bad if I had done it 15 years ago.

Just to revive this - which Anti-freeze/Coolant is everyone using in their X's and can reccomend? I've read certain modern brands are unsuitable for older vehicles?

Cheers Rob - The 'UP' Red Paraflu seems to be the newer stuff compared to the 'old' 'Paraflu 11' blue stuff.... There is both on ebay. Wonder what the difference is colour aside? Anyway factory stuff must be the way to go.....

Just a word of warning, check the chemicals that are used in RED antifreeze. Are they suitable for x1/9?
I am a member of the RR Enthusiasts club and some time ago there was a news letter item that some one had used RED antifreeze which resulted in head gasket going and core plugs falling out, even though the can had said suitable for all cars, he said that the manufacture had now amended the wording.
There recommendation was to only use blue or green antifreeze on classic cars.
Perhaps this is a better product and may be OK

I use the red paraflu and all seems ok so far (been in the engine ober a year).

The issue as I understand it is to make sure you don't mix them as they don't play well together.
