Running ROUGH since timing belt change..

I was feeling rather proud of myself for changing my timing belt... But then upon starting... Uh oh :(

It just doesn't run right. It's Spluttery, reluctant to idle, and backfires.

So I'm thinking that my cam timing isn't right. Going back and checking it, the crankshaft dimple is aligned with the rightmost finger, and the camshaft dimple is aligned with the pointer on the cover mount. Could I have the camshaft timing 180 degrees out?

Do I need to reset the ignition timing? Perhaps maybe I knocked the distributer?

I ain't having much X1/9 luck at the moment..

Firstly i would check your ignition timing as the dizzy drive relies on the cambelt and always moves a little on instalation.

It is possible to get the cam timing out as you suggest - however as long as you aligned the finger and the dimple correctly then this is not the case.

again my bet is that your ignition timing is out

I'm sure Les is right.
Trust me, from experience, the engine won't start with the cam 180 degrees out.
One of the major changes in setting up a 1500 to a 1300 engine is the cam being aligned 180 degrees differently.
As long as you read the 1500 suppliment added to later haynes manuals you'll be fine.

SUCCESS! It was indeed the timing.

I took the opportunity to fit Electronic ignition since I was having to re-time it anyway.

This is probably really basic stuff for most people on here, but I feel really satisfied having tackled this! :D
