Yeah, the car is trying to make you burn the extra calories in the take-away
On the technical front, could be something to do with stopping and starting again fairly shortly afterwards, unburnt fuel in the carb or something. Not really a techie, I employ staff for that :?

Technically ? I think it either the starter or the charging, not even a click from the starter motor ?

Answers on a post card please

If your battery is not Flat does the electrics die when you turn the ignition?

Another very common failure area is the Ignition switch had this fault on my current and last x19

Get a multimeter across the battery terminals with the engine running and read what voltage the alternator is running, should be 13 / 14 volts any less your alternator is duff. Does the battery charging light go out on the dash ok?

Have you checked the earth strap, if the earthing is defective this effects the starting, but also the ability of the alternator to charge the battery, cleaning and tightening the earth strap between the gearbox and body you may find an increase in the voltage measured at the battery with the engine running.

I have some spares lying about if you wanted to pass by sometime.

I'm assuming you've tried the old faithful kicking and hitting with the mash hammer :)
