I sent an email off to a guy I've spoken to a few times in Invercargill, just to see if he was OK, and had this reply back- things seem to be pretty bad over there..

Here's the reply:

Thanks for the kind thoughts.I was in New York and Washington on 9/11.The destruction I am seeing 24 hours a day from 3 tv stations is unreal.and way worse.
I am still trying to locate my cousin and his family who lived at Governers bay.
Also keep in mind the NZ fiat and Lancia club is very activly based in CHCH.
MY emails have been unanswered.
98 confirmed dead but they only releasing identified ones. reading between the lines thers another couple hunred stacked up. youngest so far 5 month baby.
No one been found alive today just heaps of bodies.
British SAR team has arrived... a big thanks from NZ.
The quake was felt serverly twice in Dunedin a 4 hour drive south of CHCH.
On a happier note just picked the 'spagetti can' up from auto tuner today $92.00 as it was taking me $75.00 to drive to work and back for the week , a trip of about 12km each way most of it at 100km
hope the money is well spent as petrol is $2.02 a litre.
