This was an American video, they have lower comression,and more clearance...European X1/9's DO bend valves when the belt breaks,the only one I know of in the range that doesn't is the little FIRE engine.

Losing the cambelt in an x1/9 will almost certainly damage the valves and can even bend the piston conrod.
I know because in my distant youth I purcahsed a new cylinder head and replaced the after the cambelt went only 3 weeks later the conrod came through the block.
