My garage is kept dry with a dehumidifier. It is set to turn on whenever the humidity goes above 60% and dumps all the water directly to the outside, so I don't have to do anything like empty the container or check the humidity level.

I have got a temperature/humidity indicator in the garage so I know it is working (usually never goes above 70%, even when I drive a wet car/bike in).

I would recommend buying a de-humidifier. You don't have to get a big industrial one, mine is just a small household one (the industrial ones dry the air out quicker but use more electricity to do it, unless you can get one cheap of course).

If you use the silica gel you will have a pot collecting water that you have to empty and you will be constantly drying out the silical gel. The gel dryers are more suited to drying small areas or where you need to get something bone dry as they suck all the moisture out of the air, unlike a de-humidifier that only works when there is too much moisture.

I have found 60% to be spot on, my car and bikes (and everything else in the garage) have no problems with damp or rust, which saves an awful lot of effort applying rust prevention or de-rusting. It also means the brake discs don't rust up when you leave the car/bike for a long time (perfect for the X1/9  ).

I can't remember what model it is, I will have a look and update this post when I know.

I have a cheap Homebase own brand duhumidifier in my garage. Keeps it bone dry.

I used to get water condensing on the inside of the metal roof and dripping onto tools and the car. No more.

I drilled through the brickwork and ran a pipe through, so constant drainage. Really worthwhile - previous duhimidifier didn't have this set up and I was forever forgetting to empty the container which meant the dehumidifier switched off and condensation started again after a couple of days.

How do you think I managed to get 400-odd posts (yes, they mostly are 'odd posts', thankyou Niggle !) - the winter time is when I flourish, as no one requires technical know-how, just a bit of friendly banter and lots of pictures to see them through to the Spring.

Doing.

Hi All

I bought a max / min hygrometer off ebay and after a week of running the dehumidifier in the garage, after sealing all the gaps in the garage with gap filling foam (great fun like recreating the quatermass experiment )humidity has dropped from 84% to around 62% (its taking about 2 litres per day of water out)

:-)

These machines sound great, might also have a word with santa claus. Does it matter what size of garage you have ? or will it eventually sort it out?

Cheers

Tony,

My garage is 20 foot x 24 foot (about 6m x 8.5m) with an open space pitched roof and a standard domestic dehumidifier has no problems. Once it is at the right humidity it does not need much to keep it there.

The first one I bought - quite a while ago - kept a two bedroom maisonette dry. When I moved to Bedfordshire it found great service in the garage.

£100-£150 will get something pretty good that will do a decent sized flat or house - easy life in a garage.

Without one in the garage (after the old one packed up - 10 years old though !) I got condensation on the underside of the metal roof that dripped down over tools and car. Literally disappeared overnight when I bought the Homebase one.
