Fiat X19 Fuel Tank

More

After 20+ years resting in my garage, my 1983 Fiat X19 1500 has just been MOT'd and is now back on the road. The petrol tank has been chemically cleaned and I've put an in-line filter in that indicates that there's still a lot of muck coming through from the tank. It looks like new fuel tanks used to be available but all the places I've searched on line are showing as out of stock. Does anyone know where I might be able to source a new X19 fuel tank?

Hi,
if you've had the tank cleaned, why is there still lots of rubbish coming through?
Is the filter in the tank ok?
Also, have you replaced your fuel lines?
If you had it off the road for a while they may well be breaking down. Modern fuels attack the rubber and this may well be what you are seeing in your filter.

I'm not aware of anyone supplying new tanks, but second hand ones are available sometimes

I totally agree with Andy's comments.
My car was also laid up in my garage for 20years and I spent several £1000s getting it back on the road. So that was zero on bodywork, everything rubber renewed, electrical upgrades, and..
petrol tank had much rust and a hole as well so sourced a second hand one, it leaked, a second second hand one was internally cleaned using the American POR15 product which as its final stage involved an epoxy paint to coat the inside.
It took a few days to complete the process but 7years on, it has been really good with no debris in the filters - yet! Also a new sender pickup inside the tank as well as new fuel pipes, electric fuel pump and the achilles heal of our Fiats - clean clean clean the carb insides.

I’ve changed out the fuel tank float / sender unit as my fuel gauge also wasn’t working. This has solved my gauge problem and also the fuel feeding through to the in line filter now looks much healthier (I presume that the tank filter that Andy mentioned is the one in the sender unit). Also all rubber fuel pipes changed and the carburettor overhauled. She’s running really well now and fingers crossed that this has fixed the fuel issues .. I’ll just keep a close eye on things!

Thanks to all  for your help and input.

Sam

(Henk - thanks for your link - I have a sister in law who lives in the Netherlands so May pick up a spare tank anyway when I next visit!)

Hi Sam,
That's good news that it seems to have cleared your issues.
I think doing those mods will have got any rubbish out of the fuel system.
Certainly replacing the fuel lines will have helped.
I did mean the filter on the fuel sender unit. I didn't explain that bit very well!!

Hopefully you'll have some trouble free running now

Cheers
Andy

Sam, did you manage to clean out the tank contents?
There is usually a LOT of crud gained over the decades settling at the bottom of the tank.
