As above, stalls all the time at low revs, takes an aaage to start and actually run she just chugs out, runs rich too I think.. but at high revs goes fine! Cuts out a lot at start up... and the stop light flickers... thoughts?

Mine did something similar. I put some Redex in, although you have to worry that it frees up the dirt to circulate and just makes things worse. I turned the idle up to stop it konking out. The local mechanic cleaned the carb for 65£ cash and it certainly calmed down. I did a lap of Richmond Park but it stopped on the way home, a small forward incline may have been the problem, lord knows. It eventually re started. Hard work

Possibly dirt in the fuel system blocking the low speed running jets in the carb. This sort of problem has been covered several times before on the forum (have a search) but basically a product of old age components. You may be lucky and get away with changing/installing an in line filter before the carb and dismantling the carb and giving a good blow out with an air line and use an appropriate carb rebuild kit. Or you will need to also replace all flexible fuel lines, blow out the rest, change all filters and remove the petrol tank to give it a proper clean. However, before you start on all that I would just check the basic carb settings

As a quick job, you could clean the jets and see what happens.

Also, when ticking over when warm what are the revs? They should be sitting at about 950 rpm at idle.

There is a screw on the back of the carb for adjusting the tick over speed.

had someone look her over with me, manually adjusted the engine timing which was reckoned to be about 8 degrees out so now she runs nicely :) still a bit of adjustment maybe there though.

anyway more issues... took her for shakedown, finslly got to drive an x1/9! great little thing!! however... lights super dim, heard a squeak from drivebelt area (maybe) in engine and then engine cuts out and wont restart oweing to a flat battery... started with a jump though, and drove her home. previously battery was flat after being left for a couple of days too... no dash illumination just the brake light flickers occasionally... (doesmnt light up when handbrake on though...) all gauges work, and indictor/headlight lights all iluminate on dash just no backlight.. interior lights non funcional either. as ever... helkp guys!1 thoughts?

Sounds like you may need to replace the alternator, or perhaps just tighten the alternator drive belt. It needs to be a nice tight fit.

That's ehat I'm thinking. . Hopefully no wiring issue (the flickering light troubles me..) belt wise it spins when engine is on, can wiggle belt a bit, so will get alternator tested I guess :-P as said was a nice drive for a while!

The fact that your battery was flat after driving it suggests that the alternator may be not as good as it ought to be.

So plugged a volt meter on the battery at buddy's garage.. roughly 12v at idle, 11v when lights on and 12v when revved, so alternator not working it looks like, belt could be a bit tighter perhaps but atill spins (errant squeak seems to have vanished tho!), so I guess of with the alt for a looksie and likely a replacement search! Still, nice 10 min drive to buddy's place though!

Check the earth points as well. There is an earth strap between the gear box and the bodywork.
Check the condition of it and if it looks a bit dodgy replace it. They are not expensive.

I bought a 'refurbished' alternator last year. It was faulty from the get-go but took a while to manifest in a flat battery. It looked like it had been painted and that was about it. The voltage regulator was not new... so I doubt anything else was!

I always carry a cigarette lighter volt meter around now. 50% of breakdowns are due to battery and charging issues however I'm not sure if this figure is correct for X1/9s though!!! :P

Who needs 4th gear anyway...
