Hi, I was thinking of putting one of these on but what do you do with the oil breather pipe and pipe from the carb, do they connect to the k+n or get blocked off?

No eBay APP ID and/or Cert ID defined in Kunena configurationnever block it off its a 'breather' pipe what you can do is buy a crankcase breather pipe filter like this one if my memory serves me right you need a 25mm one
you made need to put a small peice of piping to connect the breather hose and the filter so they join together

good call charlie, also with a catch tank you dont get the fumes coming into the car which can happen when stationary

Hi, just looked up oil catch tank and looks pretty simple. Also I have read on a Fiat-abarth racing website that for these air filters ducting from one of the side air scoops to the air filter is recommended which seems right because getting clean cold air instead of warm that is trapped in the engine bay. Has anyone else done this?

Although it is only marginal, you are actually better off fitting a K&N filter element into the original airbox. I have had both on the rolling road and went with the standard air box. This also avoids having the problem with oil breather and it draws cooler air.
However, twin 40 DCNFs are the way to go

As Martin says, for a road car you will get much better value out of using a better air filter in the existing filter box. It is vital that you get a good cool air supply, which you won't get with a pancake filter. You can improve the existing air filter box by cutting short the "pan handle" about 1/3 to 1/2 of its length, measuring from the pan. This will open up the air intake and improve breathing. However, you must add some suitable hose to ensure the engine still draws cool air. Take it either from low down in the engine bay, or if you have deleted the carb cooling fan, use the hole left in the separating wall between engine bay and fuel filler bay.
Also, keeping the existing air filter housing lets you keep the existing crankcase breather that Fiat spent a lot of money designing. Venting crankcase fumes to atmosphere is not very environmentally friendly and an oil catch tank is really only needed for race cars where they are actually compulsory to avoid dumping oil on the track.
On a road car an oil catch tank is just for show and is another item you will have to maintain - depending on how much oil your engine chucks out you will have to empty the catch tank at regular intervals. You will see no oil catch tank in this engine bay:

I agree with what is said above about keeping the standard airbox. From the rolling road session we did a few years ago, we got more power using a new paper air filter or a K&N element in the standard box than we got using a K&N pancake filter. Even after experimenting with different jets and ignition timing we still found the standard airbox gave more power.
However, if you want more noise and less power then go for the K&N pancake filter and also worry about what to do about crankcase fumes.

Hi, very interesting replies. It seems that keeping the standard air box with a k+n element is a more logical route and with the ducting from the air box as Racheal suggested. So I have purchased a k+n element. The reason I brought up this subject is because I have got a k+n which was bought about 10 years ago but I never used it, so it looks like ebay are going to get another sale.

Put a k+n element in with electronic ignition and runs so much better! these two upgrades are well worth the effort. Electric fuel pump going in next, just to get rid of those nervous feelings on hot start up ie is the fuel going to get there before the battery starts to wane.
