are all the 1300 ones made out of steel as the one above??....funnily enough i was refitting my fuel tank and sorting engine bay today, one of the things i was doing was deciding which expansion tank to use as i have a few,in the end i actually used a vauxhall one,but as my car was originally a 1300 i have presumed that the squarish expansion tank that it came with was the original 1300 one?although its plastic and not metal,i also have a smaller plastic one that was in the 1500 that i broke up...i dont need either of them if either of them is what your after?

I believe only the early cars had steel tanks, and not all were stainless.

The squarish tank you have sounds like the Uno Turbo tank, which is a good thing. The Uno tank allows the turbo to continue to be cooled after the engine has stopped, by a clever phase-change thermo-siphon system. You won't get that with the X1/9 plastic tank but it can be replicated with the steel tank.

i cant see how that can work racheal?...there are no water connections to the turbo and oil wont be circulating without the engine running, plus the expansion tank only holds a couple of pints anyway,so with the engine not running so it will naturally be cooling, how can those couple of pints make any difference to the turbo?
plus, whichever tank i use it dosent change the fact that there are only 2 water pipe connections, one small and one larger, pretty standard for any expansion tank, big at the bottom, small at the top,the reason i used a vauxhall one is because 1,it holds more water, and 2,its round rather than square and more attractive,3,it fits better than the square one allowing better access to other bits that would otherwise be obscured by the square one.
i dont doubt what your saying and ive no doubt that in fiat specs the expansion tank is mentioned as benefitial to the turbo, but i cant see that its a better system to what ive opted for?

sorry to hijack your thread by the way, haha

This is my old UT powered Eurosport. The UT header tank is on the left. The black hose connecting just by the filler neck is the hot coolant from the turbo. There is a connection on the block that feeds coolant to the turbo. The thin blue hose coming from the front of the header tank would normally go to the top of the UT radiator, on the X1/9 it connects to the top of the thermostat housing. The bottom pipe from the header tank goes to the return pipe to the pump.

That is a good patent, the turbo's we use are without the water jackets but if your turbo is fitted with these it makes good sence to use the Uno turbo bottles.

Only oil ports,no water ports

theres no water supply to my turbo either, not even anything thats been blanked off,i looked today, plus, the expansion tank in your pic is unlike either of the fiat ones that i have,in fact,as i said, there are only two available water hoses to connect to my expansion tank and none of the others you mentioned.....dont forget,my engine is about as far from being a standard uno turbo as you can get road wise, and even after avanti had finished with it it then had more turbo and ecu work done,so i can only presume the turbo has been changed but i was to excited about my hydraulic engine/boot cover that was fitted today to start thinking about anything else tbh racheal...take a look at the vid i posted today on fb racheal, ive yet to fit the motors but that gives you the idea...ferrari 308 "west coast style"!!!haha

Surprised that Julian hasn't popped up on this thread yet - I seem to remember him saying somewhere a while ago that he trashed a turbo or two on his race X1/9 by having the wrong type of expansion tank and resulting boil-over after turning the engine off....
